Moral responsibility for computationally designed products

چکیده
Abstract Computational design systems (such as those using evolutionary algorithms) can create designs for a variety of physical products. Introducing these into the process risks creating ‘responsibility gap’ flaws in products they are used to create, human designers may no longer believe that wholly responsible them. We respond this problem by distinguishing between causal responsibility and capacity (the ability be morally actions) product argue while computational both casually designs, who use developers them have such designs. show there is gap designed comparing different accounts moral robots AI (instrumentalism, machine ethics, hybrid responsibility). all three support conclusion any or faults systems. conclude showing how responsibilities accountability blameworthiness should attributed designers,

متن کاملComputationally designed libraries for rapid enzyme stabilization
The ability to engineer enzymes and other proteins to any desired stability would have wide-ranging applications. Here, we demonstrate that computational design of a library with chemically diverse stabilizing mutations allows the engineering of drastically stabilized and fully functional variants of the mesostable enzyme limonene epoxide hydrolase. First, point mutations were selected if they ...

conditions, would they choose to hold on to the concrete judgment that Bill is morally responsible or the abstract judgment that no one can be responsible in a deterministic universe? The results showed no clear majority on either side. Whenandunderwhat circumstances arewe responsible for our actions? What roledoes conscious awareness of one’s actions play in the assessment and ascription of responsibility? To answer these questions, Neil Levy has written a provocative and interesting account of the necessary role of consciousness in the assessment of responsibility for action. In an economical 150 pages, Levy makes the case fo...
متن کاملMoral Responsibility and Consciousness
Our goal in this paper is to raise a general question about the relationship between theories of responsibility, on the one hand, and a commitment to conscious attitudes, on the other. The evidence from cognitive science suggests that there are no conscious mental states playing the right causal roles to count as decisions, judgments, or evaluations. We propose that all theorists should determi...
